SAIS International Policy Program (IP)
The Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in Washington, D.C., is a leading graduate school of international affairs, educating students for professional careers in government, business, journalism, international law and non-profit organizations. Founded in 1943 by Paul Nitze and Christian Herter, SAIS has been a division of The Johns Hopkins University since 1950.
The IP program is a concentration within the International Relations field at SAIS. IP offers an interdisciplinary curriculum in international policy making and analysis, integrating economics, political science, law, and other academic disciplines. It provides a forum for students to examine policy not only in the abstract, but as it is created and implemented in particular institutional settings.
IP addresses both the cross-border/multilateral aspects of policy and the political economy/comparative aspects of policy, emphasizing the interactions between the public and private sectors, between governments and markets. A key aim of the program is to teach students how to apply policy-making tools, concepts, and frameworks to real problems and institutional settings. This is the reason that much of IP teaching combines theory with empirical case studies.
IP students may specialize in one of the following focus areas: International Energy Policy, International Environmental Policy, and International Health Policy. (IP was formerly known as the Energy, Environment, Science and Technology Program).
The SAIS Energy Club
About the Club
The Johns Hopkins SAIS Energy Career Club is a student-led organization dedicated to educating students about the energy sector and the numerous career paths and opportunities within it. Through organizing site visits, career panels, and lectures by distinguished guests, the club aims to empower students to identify both available positions and constructive avenues through which to pursue desired opportunities.
The club further focuses on enhancing ties between energy sector actors and Johns Hopkins SAIS and educating the industry on unique educational background SAIS students bring with them to the workplace. Club members’ interests and experience run the spectrum and include energy trading, risk analysis, and renewable energy technologies. In addition, SAIS graduates have received a broad yet in-depth education that combines analysis of geopolitics with extensive instruction in international economics, including courses such as Multinational Corporate Finance, Financial Derivatives and Risk Management, and Economics of Natural Resources.
